Week 9 Question

Next week or perhaps the week after spring break, we will take a short field trip to a local high school. During this visit, you will have the opportunity to meet and talk to American high school students. We will also use this visit as a way to generate ideas for our third essay, which will be a cause-effect essay about some issue related to American high school students.

As a prelude to this trip, I'd like for you to discuss your impressions of American high school students. More specifically, I'd like you to explain what stereotypes you have about high school students in the U.S. (your assumptions about what you think American high school students are like). These stereotypes can be based on movies, TV shows, pop music, hearsay (what you've heard other people say), or personal experience.

  1. hi! I think that high school students in the US enjoy school more for pleasure than study! I mean, according to movies like Gossip girls, there are always having fun at school, they miss class but they are always at school just to chill with their friends! Also, they really care about fashion! It seems like they have to be perfect, change clothes every day to show that they are cool or wealthy. However, some movies like Smallville shows that they care about their studies and that they have some goals for their future! Even though they have fun sometimes and extra-activities at school(sport, dance, theater...), they are conscious about their studies and try to not miss any class. Nice week-end everybody!

  2. hi..
I'm gonna say what I know from what I've seen in movies, and what I learned from friends. first of all, I think high school students are not opened to the world. They just wanna get other people's attention by tryin to be attractive by wearin sexual clothes, which I think they are too young to do that. I'm not saying they don't care about their studying, and I'm not talkin about all of them. As we say in arabic( your fingers are not the same);that is, people are not the same. anyways, high school students wait until they get 18 and be a collage student to be free and do whatever they want. So I think they don't control themselves and the primary intention is havin sex with uncountable numbers. For example, I've talked to a friend of mine about his memories in high school and I notices that the only thing he talked about was how many girl he had sex with and how much weed he smoked!!!!!
this is what I know about high school students and not all of them like that, but this is what I could knew about them. Next week we'll be able to write the true impression about them :).
thanks and sorry if I said anything wrong.

  3. Hi!!
I think high school students enjoy school life in America. I saw many movies about American student's life. everyone enjoyed school life. There are a lot of events in high school. I think everyone join to club. I think they develop theirself to club activities. For example they join to soccer club, dance club and football club.It is like Japan, but there is prom in America. It is fun for me. I'm looking forward to talking to American high school students. Have a nice day.

  4. Hi!!!
I think that high school students enjoy the life. They go to school, but for some students it's just a place to see friends and to have fun. By the way,for me, American's series reflecte high school students like this. Furthermore, sports are really important in a high school student's life, and to be in the school's team is an honor. Furthermore, I think that high school students like challenge through the sport but also though classes for some students. Finally, to my point of view, high school students are really concerned about their look, so they always wear fashion clothes, and gilrs make up a lot!

  5. Hello,

American high schools? My impression about them?
I imagine them very energetic, currious, disobedient and funny. They want to grew up faster, to drink, to use drugs, to fight, to love these are my opinion. Also i saw lots of movies about the high school teens. So i kind of know a little bit about them. And i hope to learn more about them in our trip and research paper :) It will be interesting to talk to them!

  6. hey!

For me, when I think about American high school students,I remind "Prom" and "Prom Queen". I wonder that being prom queen is really honorble. Usually in a movie, there are two girl, and each group has a leader, the most popular girl who represent the group. They compete each other with popularity and disturb the other leader not to win the prom. In addition, they realated with cheerleaders because usually cheerleaders are the most beautiful and popular girls with blond hair. However, in Korea, there are no cheerleaders, needless to say prom. Moreover, when I watch monies, There is a teacher who date with stuedent, and the teacher face serious problem because it is illegal. On the other hand, sometimes students date with thier teacher on purpose because they wnat to know what will be on exam. Is it common in Amereca?

  7. hi.

high school students in U.S. have same problems Japanese students. it means they worry about study, relationship between friends, parents, and boy or girl friend, and future, all of them. when i was high school student, i had allays done practice a sport every day, even during vacations. also, i was not a member of popular group. it rather inconspicuous. however, i think a age of high school was fun. i like my friends. we could have talked about everything.
anyway, it is my questions; actually, what are they interested in hobbies, movement, or faith?
moreover, where do they go to when hung out with who and what?
i do not know about them because i would not watch American high school movies. i want to see them with no grasses.

  8. Hi!!

First of all, I already went to American high school last semester,so I would like to say American high school students have always good questions. Because I compare to my country's high school students, they don't really think about "why? or why not?." And also, my country's education is different to American's one. In my country's one there are no disscuss to the group or classes. We just listen to teachers' speaking. If you have any question we have to ask after the class or after school.

  9. What I think about the high schools in the U.S. that they have many types of students what I mean is that they have very different personalities and goals because they are from different races and from different backgrounds. I think American students in high school have three main things that they focus in: their study, the romantic relationships between each other, and their main hobby for example soccer game. I think high school in U.S. is soo much fun and also has pressure on the students because they have to focus on three things. I think when I go to the high school I will see whole America their ,because those students represent many races and many social levels which will be very interesting. I am very excited to see them.

  10. Hi,
I think high school students in the U.S are different with japanese high school students. My image about american high school students are like 'the O.C.' or 'Gossip Girl'. they focus on their friends, love, party more then study. In Japan, most high school students focus on the exam to enter the university. Of coulse they focus on their friends, love...but not like american. It's my image about American high school students! I'm excited to go to high school after spring break.
