Week 12 Question

It's amazing how fast the semester has gone by. We have only three more weeks of actual classes, and there is still so much to do.

I've enjoyed reading about your HS experiences. Please keep them coming.

I'd like to focus on our HS visit in one more way. For this week's blog, tell us what you learned from the HS students that was new, surprising, and/or really interesting.

For example, I just assumed that a lot of HS students smoked cigarettes but that only a few smoked marijuana. NOT THE CASE. According to the HS students, more high schoolers smoke pot than cigarettes! That's a surprising (and disturbing) fact.

What surprising facts did you learn from our high school visit?

  1. I’ve been here for almost one year I couldn’t figure out well what the people busy with, what’s do they want. I was always interested that to know how America get so powerful in this short time, there might be a reason. I learned something new than American strategy for study. For example in our countries they will study how the life was of people from thousand years ago, which is stopping their mind thinking at the future, this idea comes from authoritarian regimes that don’t let the local people improve their mind, and we believe that the leader is more important than our country or land. However, American believe that they have to work for their country not for a person or their leader, because of that they are working hard and try to find the closest way to improve their country’s life or power. So they know children can learn easier that adults, that’s why they didn’t hide anything from young people to know about. I wasn’t very interested the first time when I knew we will visit the high school’s students, because I thought they might ask where do I live or what color do I like something like that, but when I visit, it was totally different their ideas than what I thought about, even they know about Japan more than Japanese. If we talking about politics, we might get trouble from the government, but American teach their people at the very young age about politics. Also I understood that not only they want to help their country but also they care about other nation that they don’t have enough freedom in this world to live. I’m very proud of them. Life doesn’t have any meaning if you live just for yourself.

  2. hi! what i have learned from the students is that students smoke more pot than cigarettes in the high school! This surprised me and i think that it is really bad and sad! In my country, especially in my ex-high school, most of the students smoke cigarettes. Many smoke pot, but the fact is that it's difficult to identify them; they really hide themselves! However, the 'addicts' just don't care about what people say or think! And most of the time they are the rebels of the school. That's it! By the way, i really enjoyed the visit!

  3. hi. I felt from the hs visit that the atmosphere of class room is different from Japan. actually, i have heard about these difference; many students like to remark and ask questions. moreover, on the wall of class room, many pictures and posters were put. However, i mind one thing during the discussion when we asked what kind of a person is not popular. one student explained about it thought, i consider about his speech. it is meaning that same people use a irony or sarcasm because the speech will be more fun or interesting. actually, i rather hate it, it differs a joke; i will not laugh because i do not understand it means. if anytime and anybody speak sarcasm, i would be tired.

  4. Hello everybody,

Honestly i did not know a lot about high school students. I saw a lot of movies about americans high school students and when i saw them i was surprised because it just like in the movies. Before i thought that the movies are not true but it is actually true. I learned a lot i did not know that marijuana is more popular than cigarettes; it is amazing that almost 92% of the students are marijuana smokers, this surprised me more. Thay were funny when they said that smoke for being cool but it is obvious everybody i think do that in this age (15-18). It was interesting and fun and i kind of remembered my high school. thanks Josh for taking us there! :)

  6. Hi!!!!
The surprising fact I learnt from our high school visit is that high school students smoke more pop than cigarettes. It was a sad revelation due to the fact that the effects of the pop are worse than the effects of the cigarette. Furthermore, in France, in some high school many students smoke, but just cigarette. In fact, students don't say that they smoke pop even if someone ask him, whereas everyone know who smoke cigarettes because smoking cigarette is sometimes view as "a cool thing".However, I think, it's caused by the law because in France smoking pop is illegal.

  7. Hello!!

I really surprised about smoking and drinking because percentage of somking and drinking of high school students are so high.It was shocked to me. In America, drinking alcohol is really strict for under 21, so I thought percentage of alcohol is low. Compare with my country "Japan," it is not strict about drinking alcohol for high school students because convenience stores sell alcohol. That's why Japanese high school students can get alcohol easily.

  8. Hello lol

The one of the most different and surprise fact b/w Korean and the U.S students is how they select their classes. I saw lots of movies about American high school students, so I knew they take classes that they are really interesting. Furthermore, they have different class rooms of each class; therefore, they have to move to another class when they have different subject class. I was surprised that. I knew that before, but it is still surprise. In Korea, usually only Universities have this kind of system!!!!

  9. Hi everybody...
high school was so interesting for all of us. I can't deny that I learned things for the students. the most interesting thing I noticed was that they were all interesting in meeting international students. I knew most of the things they have said such as smokin weed and drinkin cuz my american friends have told my their stories when they were high school students. I think nothing was new for me except smokin cigarettes. when they said, some students smoke to be cool or try to be same as the movies. yeah this is what I learned from them. hopefully we can visit them again. and thanks for that.

  10. Hi everybody,
I really hoped that I could go with you but a circumstance happened and prevent me from going with you.
My classmates told me a lot about the trip and how interesting it was.
And what surprised me is how the high school students have great knowledge about different things. They asked very specific questions about other cultures.
    That was surprising to me.
    Thank.
